Restless 01 Published

Last night was the release party of the first issue of Restless Anthology; coinciding with the Mesa downtown “Second Friday” monthly event; distributed out of Evermore Nevermore.

Things seemed to go very well at the event, and I ran into a few people I knew, and one of the authors I didn’t know at all- he was walking around and saw me with the zine which sparked up a conversation.

While there, I found out the zine chopped down its submission word count.  Perhaps I’ll have the record for the longest story.  The story was published as a whole, which I’m happy for.  Now that it’s out, I’ll give some tidbits about my story.

  • The title is Affliction.
  • It adheres to the zine’s prompt, which was “zombies”.

I’m not sure if my story is too much to the usual reader of my stuff, but it also might not be enough for a fan of the zombie genre.  I didn’t think I even had a story about it in me, but I did.   Funny enough, two of the things I wanted to add to the story didn’t even find their way into the story while I was writing it.  If  I ever expand the story, expect to see these two things.

In case you didn’t know, there is an online copy of their preview issue.  My story there is entitled Bacon Raincheck.  Have a free look at it here:

Restlessly Accepted: #1

The short of it:

I am selected for the first official issue of Restless Anthology; slated to release June 11th.

The less short of it:

I got a reply the day before with the good news.  There were some nice phrases used towards me which might have been sarcastic, but I’ll take that I can get.

Then last night I got a mail from the person editing it.  I’m not concerned with the edit since that’s just what has to be done.  Better to be edited (heavily or lightly) and accepted than complete and rejected.  I feel kind of special just for being edited; in my own roundabout-ly explained way.

Later that night I got another mail saying the story is still being edited, but it’s a much easier read from this point forward.  I’ll admit my start was kind of shaky since I had a ton of info, setup, and action.

Restless #1 update

I finally got some word back from the zine.  I still don’t know if it will be used or not, but I do know they have it in their possession and also received my “updated” bio.

[The first bio was created by the Restless team since I had a too-short window to send mine in.  Though I loved what was said of me, this one is a tad truer.]

In the last “EVal” meeting I discovered the date of the zine deadline was pushed, so I guess I could have worked longer on the submission.

Restlessly Submitting #1

My submission for Restless Anthology has been submitted.  It’s still close to the deadline, but it’s almost a day early.

What I’ll about it is…it’s beefy.  They had a cap, and I hovered ever-so-closely to it.  That’s with my edit.

For what it’s worth, this is something I actually fretted over a bit.  This thing was heavily edited, which is also something I don’t usually do with my own stuff.  usually a polish and that’s about it – unless copious notes are sent my way [which happened]. Continue reading

First Draft/No Draft news

Shocker. eh?  I bombed out on Script Frenzy.  I hoped to break the cycle but life and procrastination kicked back in.

I was actually spending that time on the (extended) deadline for Restless.  Saturday I finished the draft; too big, and needing an editing swipe.

This thing currently clocks in at 24 pages and 10k+ words at this point.  I need to start curbing that stuff, I know.  Thankfully I got good notes from a friend and I’ll be using that as a basis at my chopping.

Funny as it was, a few of the things I was planning to write this whole thing to include.  Does that mean a script?  Maybe…but I have other fish to fry [finish].  The worst criticism so far being told it reads like written by a screenwriter.  No sluglines were involved, I swear.

On the bright side, I had a revelation about my NaNo ’09 story.  I also have two screenplay ideas to toss into the hopper…though I might want a first draft written by someone else.  The other one’s based on an obscure UK book which only lasted a single printing.

I’m on the fence with a couple other things due to some blogs I read from people I respect, as well as some stuff some equally respected comedians have been saying in the netisphere.  Do I make a new blog for non-writing?  Should I move all the writing posts to a site which is made for writing excepts/chapters?  Do I add/remove some ‘social networking’ avenues (as the kiddies like to call it)?  Do I finally start up that long-rumored cult site/domain?  Who in the Corellian Nine Hells knows…
